New Hallway Exhibit: From a Cornfield to Space To mark the 50th anniversary of the successful launch of the Explorer 7 satellite, our staff is pleased to bring a new photographic exhibit to the third floor hallway outside of the library. The display chronicles the advent of radiation measurement from space beginning with Space Science and Engineering Center founder Dr. Verner Suomi’s first heat budget experiments in a cornfield in the late 1940’s to his later, more sophisticated satellite-borne radiometers like the one that flew on Explorer 7. Comprising eight black and white photographs with accompanying text, the display illustrates the vital contributions Dr. Suomi made to early satellite meteorology, and consequently, the United States space program. We encourage you to take a few moments to enjoy the display and appreciate the history and remarkable legacy it represents.
