GALE: Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment (GALE)
GALE studied a variety of mesoscale phenomena and air-sea interaction processes indigenous to the East Coast of the United States and it investigated their contributions to cyclogenesis. The location of the GALE observational network, centered on the eastern Carolinas, and the period of the filed experiment, January 15 through March 15, 1986, encompassed the general location and time of year most common for cyclogenesis on the East Coast.

Thirteen special observing periods were designated for intensive observations from conventional and special GALE sources. An integral part of the experiment was GOES data which was collected and archived at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Space Science and Engineering Center. This data was made available to the Raleigh, North Carolina GALE forecast office via a workstation remotely connected to the Man-computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS) at UW-SSEC where the data is archived on video cassettes.
