AVE/SESAME: Atmospheric Variability Experiment/Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment (AVE/SESAME)

Project SESAME was a scientific partnership between government (NOAA/NASA/NSF) and the atmospheric science community to lay the foundation for improved prediction of tornadoes, and hail, particularly those occurring in “family” outbreaks… in the major multiscale field programs of three spring months each in the early 1980’s.

The purpose of the program was twofold: (1) to produce more complete and meaningful data sets by combing rapid-scan GOES imagery with conventional observations from the AVE-SSESAME experiment; and (2) to study small-scale characteristics of severe thunderstorms and their environment by using the above mentioned data sets. Satellite data had shown things not observed by conventional data, but alone, the picture was a limited one. The same was true for radar or radiosonde or surface measurements. By combining radar and satellite images, or rawinds with cloud drift winds, research possibilities were greatly enhanced.
